Abstract

Managers need to ‘look out’ much more than they are accustomed to doing. For quite understandable reasons across the world, today’s managers are focused on fixing urgent problems that demand attention now and have little time left to exercise their curiosity about outside trends and influences on the company. This is perfectly understandable given the pressures of flatter organisations, of pressure on the bottom line of profitability, and the focus on slashing costs in an organisation. It is just like the person sitting at home preparing a household budget for the year ahead which is seen as an important task given the pressure on the household finances. However, at the same time, the bath is running upstairs and given the preoccupation with budgets the bath is now overflowing with water coming down the stairs. While the task of budgeting is important, this must be left to attend to the urgent chore of turning off the water!
