Sovereignty in the Modern World

In: The Impact of the Euro

Abstract

The decision to honour Helmut Kohl with the freedom of the city of London in February 1998 was seized upon by Euro-Sceptics with predictable fury. I was dismayed to hear at least one Shadow Cabinet member deride Helmut Kohl as the architect of the single currency. Chancellor Kohl has shown tremendous leadership in Germany and Europe since his election in 1982 and there can be no doubt that he has been a major supporter of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) during this period. But EMU was an integral part of the European project long before Helmut Kohl became Chancellor of Germany.
