Abstract

In 1979 Deng Xiaoping opened China to closer economic contacts with the world. This opening was the beginning of China’s economic integration with other nations, and required parallel actions on the political side in the form of improved intergovernmental relations between China and other nations. Beginning in 1979 China adopted a policy of improving commercial and investment relationships with its trading partners, including neighboring countries and the western industrial nations.
