Equality in the Public Sector: The Sky Darkens

Abstract

According to the Oxford Thesaurus, synonyms for equality are parity or sameness, but the question is parity or sameness with whom. Equality has many dimensions, but parity/differentials in respect of pay are dealt with in Chapter 5, in this volume. This chapter focuses on the six legally protected grounds: gender, race/ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief and age. Inevitably, however, the main focus is on gender and race/ethnicity as these two grounds have been legally protected for over 30 years, whereas the four other grounds are relative newcomers.
