Regional Disparities and Economic Convergence in South East Europe

Abstract

The recent history of South East Europe (SEE) is marked by massive changes in the economic situation of the region. Starting with the fall of the Soviet Union, since 1989 there has been a transition process from a communistinfluenced economic system with centralized planning to a market economy (Jackson, 1999). In addition there have been military conflicts, resulting in the fall of states accompanied by crucial social, political and economic instability. These conflicts have not yet been resolved and are still the source of potential unrest (Müller and Büchsenschütz, 2009).
