The Organisational Grapevine: Lessons for Business Leaders

Abstract

The organisational grapevine represents a fundamental conduit for the exchange of information in the contemporary business environment. When well managed, it has the capacity to serve several vital functions for the organisation. This article summarises these functions and describes a variety of specific strategies that can be implemented to effectively manage the grapevine in order to minimise the potential damaging effects of false rumours and misinformation, effectively communicate organisational change, and reinforce the credibility and impact of information communicated through more formal organisational networks.
