Provincial Systems of Innovation and Globalization in South Africa

Abstract

In this chapter, the possible effects of globalization on the spatial economy of South Africa in light of its post-apartheid provincial map are explored. The question that is initially addressed is whether the provinces which have been demarcated in post-apartheid South Africa constitute valid local (sub-national) systems of innovation. Should they do so, the issues of the viability of these systems and the strategies for their development then arise. Where provinces do not constitute systems of innovation, the rationale for their existence would then have to be interrogated.
