Abstract

There are numerous claims, both in the rhetoric of corporate values and the practitioner press, that people are the most important asset of any firm. Ulrich (1998), for example, concludes that ultimately a firm’s human resource (HR) community holds crucial responsibility for adding value and delivering results. Therefore, the task of successfully managing the performance of this essential organizational asset is increasingly seen as the key to the success of any organization.
