Abstract

The political events in the countries of Eastern Europe in the late 1980s have claimed far more attention than that usually reserved for the news highlights of an entire decade. The failure of these countries’ political systems to achieve their objectives, that is to replace capitalism with a more just and equal social system, is widely recognized and numerous interpretations have been proffered to explain it.
