Abstract

The 1990s and early 2000s were a time of strong economic performance and increasing outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) for many developing countries.1 India partook in the growth in both of these areas. One important aspect of Indian OFDI is the dominance of two knowledge-intensive industries—information technology (IT), including software and business process outsourcing, and pharmaceuticals. From a total of 306 foreign acquisitions by Indian multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the period 2000–2006, nearly 50% were in these two industries, with 29.4% from IT, software, and business process outsourcing, and 20.3% from pharmaceuticals and healthcare (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry 2006).2
