Abstract

Most research on migration within Mexico and along its borders with the United States and Guatemala has focused on historical, sociological, demographic and spatial economic aspects, either individually or in combination. Because little effort has been made to study migration within the context of spatial economic relations among regions, there has been no comprehensive treatment of migratory flows as part of and, at the same time, the result and cause of the interregional imbalances that occur when two regions interact economically. In this interaction, population movements tend to increase or diminish as interregional economic imbalances become more or less acute, and this is what determines the interregional socio-economic gradient.
