Urban Labour Markets in Developing Countries

Abstract

Despite a decade of intensive work on urban labour markets in the LDCs, we still lack realistic models for determining urban wage and employment levels in these countries. At the same time, the links between the so-called formal and informal sectors in LDCs’ cities have been set forth only in a rather informal manner, perhaps due to the absence of precise theoretical formulations and relevant data. This is particularly applicable to urban employment and labour markets in LDCs; even the very concepts of employment which are relevant to DCs may not be entirely applicable under such conditions.1
