Abstract

In common with a number of Asian NICs, over the post-war period Japan has experienced not only a high savings ratio, but also one that has continued to increase. This has surprised many people, who expected the savings ratio to stabilise as Japan approached the level of industrialisation of the advanced Western nations. This paper attempts to provide an explanation of this puzzling observation. A large number of factors probably contribute to the high savings ratio, and its continued increase. But the most dominant of these relate to the uniqueness of various institutional arrangements in Japan.
