Abstract

The third of Friedman’s major books with Anna Schwartz—the long-delayed Monetary Trends in the United States and United Kingdom (1982)—is considered. It is argued that the delay in its publication since 1966 damaged its reception. Had it appeared fifteen years earlier it would have provided a valuable contribution. But at the time it did appear, debate had moved on, and its reception was understandably poor. It was also subjected to severe econometric criticism, as has been noted in Chapter 4 .
