Abstract

In the autumn of 1908, Dennis Robertson went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, with a major scholarship in Classics, knowing that he had fulfilled the hopes and expectations of his family. It was an auspicious beginning and heralded an outstanding university career. The apparently effortless distinctions he had attained at Eton, in examination performance, in public office and on the amateur stage were repeated in the wider air of one of England’s foremost universities. Everything he touched, it seemed, turned to gold and, however briefly, he became a celebrity, universally loved and admired.
