Abstract

Climate change poses a major threat to humanity and the earth itself so everything that helps the environment must be done right away. UBI alone cannot save the planet but it will certainly help in the long struggle against climate change by helping the poorest people to survive without exploiting the environment. The environmental Kuznets Curve is without empirical support so there is no way that the environment will improve if humans grow more populous and richer. UBI, though, will slow or stop the need for economic growth, thereby allowing for emissions cuts to occur without hurting the most vulnerable. It will also encourage green modes of living, like locavorism.
