Solar energy modelling and its conversion systems

Abstract

Solar energy is the main prerequisite of the life on the earth. It is the direct source for generating heat, light, cold and power. This energy reaches the earth in the form of solar radiations after crossing several million kilometers. There are several solar radiation models developed in the literature to estimate different amount of these radiations. These models, which serve to compute the entire solar radiation components at a given earth's position, are desirable for designing solar energy systems, for good evaluations of thermal environments and for several solar applications in buildings. The different time series of solar radiation intensities (instantaneous, hourly, daily, monthly and annually) modeled in this work can be used in the design and estimation of the performances of all solar energy conversion systems. These systems, as briefly presented in this chapter, include, with no limitation, solar hydrogen, solar water heaters, solar cooling, solar desalination, PV arrays, solar chimney, solar-powered fans, solar-powered home lighting, solar power water pumping, hybrid PV/thermal and various means of concentrating solar power.
