Agriculture as Driver of Economic Growth and Development in Serbia

Abstract

The area of agricultural production is in many ways an important area of the Serbian economy. Agriculture in Serbia has extremely strong economic power, it is the basis for economy and engine for development of rural areas. Agriculture is also the only sector in Serbia with a positive foreign trade balance, which means that it is the backbone of foreign trade development of country. Serbian agriculture has great potential and provides positive results due to its advantageous geographical position, beneficial climate conditions and high quality soil, significant processing capacities, as well as favourable trading conditions – preferential access to major markets. We believe that the future of agriculture and food industry in Serbia is the optimum use and conservation of available production capacity, increase agriculture production, changing the structure of production in favour of intensive agriculture for export and production high quality products. This sector will in the future determine the economic growth and developments in the country.
