Abstract

Good governance as a concept was most popular in the 1990s when in development studies and economics the importance of governance was recognized beyond growth or technical interventions. We discuss how different models of democracy provide different interpretations of participation, transparency and corruption and how these influence the organization of governance and ultimately the way in which strategies are crafted and implemented. A reflection on good governance cannot be omitted as it provides a necessary framing for both the context and goal of transition strategies. What is envisioned by means of such a strategy is not only a relation between social and ecological systems that can be interpreted as sustainable, but also a desirable state of the social system.
