Abstract

Since the 1960s and ’70s Australia has been home to an ever-increasing Muslim population. Indeed, the wider Muslim community is one of the fasting growing in Australia and has been active in developing Not-for-Profit organizations (NFPs) to service their needs. Thus, the aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the development of Muslim diasporas in Australia and the context in which their NFP organizations operate. In doing so, the chapter will also provide an overview of the wider philanthropic sector to help frame the place and scope of the Muslim NFP sector, the challenges that the sector has faced - particularly post 9/11 - and then conclude with some thoughts on possible future lines of inquiry.
