Abstract

The chapter broadly discusses the definition and the elements of the artificial intelligence ecosystem tracing the evolution of the different concepts related to it. It explores the development of artificial intelligence definitions, going so far as to describe it as a loose term in which many elements and sub-concepts coexist. It then focuses on Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning and Big Data, emphasising algorithms and data bias topics. The chapter shreds evidence on artificial intelligence as a ‘black box’ in terms of the principles of its operation. Then, the innovation’s paradigmatic scope is discussed by identifying ten peculiar features and their implications: attractiveness, multidisciplinarity, pervasiveness, speed, connectivity, transversality, cross-fertilisation, disruptive’ character, paradigmatic scope and opacity.
