Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of university service and leadership positions in academic careers. It acknowledges the challenges that arise when taking on administrative roles, especially for women in underrepresented disciplines. Despite the potential difficulties, service and management roles offer valuable benefits. They help build professional networks, enhance teaching through interdisciplinary collaborations and student support, and contribute to research by applying a research focus to service work. However, it is crucial to strike a balance and carefully consider the extent of these roles to avoid overwhelming one’s workload. The chapter also explores the implications of accepting leadership positions, such as department chair or associate dean, highlighting the potential drawbacks and impact on academic promotion prospects. It concludes by providing advice on pursuing leadership development opportunities and negotiating compensation when taking on managerial responsibilities.
