Abstract

This chapter discusses strategies for attracting postgraduate students and becoming an effective academic supervisor. It emphasizes the importance of effective student supervision as a measure of research productivity and professional impact, and explores the benefits of developing a cadre of enthusiastic and engaged postgraduate students and the potential for co-publishing with them. The chapter also highlights the significance of research student supervision in influencing and shaping a new generation of scholars. However, it acknowledges the existence of exploitative and unethical supervisory relationships, including issues related to authorship and conflicts of interest. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for explicit policies on professional and personal relationships in academia to ensure fair and respectful supervision.
