Abstract

This chapter responds to the need to investigate the dynamics of how businesses, including SMEs, are agents in institutional change. We suggest collective opportunity recognition as a mechanism for multi-actor agency in institutional change, and present a framework illustrating these dynamics. We also identify four forms of change agency, differing in the level of collectiveness and intentionality. Altogether, these propositions generate much needed insight to bridge the extant knowledge on micro- and macro-level economic dynamics, that is, an understanding of collaborative meso-level dynamics between firms as well as other actors. The chapter concludes with a discussion on further research avenues that would add important insight on these highly complex and contextual dynamics.
