Say ‘yes’ to ‘no-code’ solutions: how to teach low-code and no-code competencies to non-IT students

Abstract

Most of the barriers to using Artificial Intelligence (AI) were in one way or another related to difficulties associated with mastering a formal language and the time needed to do that. This research aims to identify the challenges for non-IT professionals when they gain their first low-code experiences. This chapter discusses teaching practices to neutralize emotional tensions and lower learning entry barriers when teaching low-code skills. We understand low-code and no-code tools as solutions designed to simplify the process of creating software applications, making it possible for people with little or no coding experience to build them. Through eight focus groups with 162 participants led between September and December 2022 in the form of creative workshops, we distilled the key blockers and enablers related to the low-code tools learning process. Moreover, we spoke to 21 IT academic teachers from Central and Eastern European countries who lead courses covering low-code skills and shared their perspectives on designing a friendly low-code learning environment.
