Abstract

Sell-side analysts research companies and distribute their opinions to their clients. They play an integral function in the capital markets by alleviating information asymmetries and influencing executive behavior. Despite their importance, the survival of the industry has been threatened from a number of angles: competition from discount brokers, an explosion in passive investing, and regulatory reforms to name a few. This chapter provides an overview of the typical role of a sell-side analyst, how the industry has evolved, and how the role of the analyst is evolving with it. Academic research along these lines is highlighted and potential opportunities for future research are discussed.
