Abstract

Digital technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things promise to massively revolutionize agriculture. In the quest for efficiency- and productivity-enhancing innovation, several solutions are being deployed, ultimately leading to fully autonomous farms and the shift of most labor from on- to off-farm professions. In the context of highly digitized supply chains, the imperative for most small farms will become “adapt or perish”. As in many other sectors, digital transformation potentially brings both opportunity and risks: seizing the former while mitigating the latter will require an active role of governments and international organizations together with responsible operations in the private sector. The consequences for the quality and quantity of work are significant: as tasks are gradually replaced in traditional agricultural work, new competences are needed, especially for what concerns the management of data and the effective operation of AI systems.
