A mixed methods research notation system for complex designs

Abstract

Mixed methods research (MMR) is growing in popularity from within business and management disciplines, as evidenced by the synthesis of MMR prevalence studies in business and management documented by Molina-Azorin and Cameron (2015) and more recently Molina-Azorin (2023). The nomenclature of the MMR movement and its associated notation systems originate from what Creswell and Plano Clark (2007) refer to as the Procedural Development period in the historical stages of the evolution of the MMR movement. The aim of this chapter is to present an updated version of the extended MMR notation system and to then apply it to three published MMR studies from business and management fields. The chapter concludes with recommendations for the future utility of the extended MMR notation system for not only MMR designs but also multimethod research designs and particularly those research design that are more complex.
