Abstract

This chapter introduces the main elements for the analysis of economic policies, theories and approaches to the political economy of health, identifying the foundational concepts for analysis including the stages of policy making. Then, it looks at the role of actors, mechanisms, and strategies influencing the policy process. The chapter then discusses the role of the political economy analysis of health policy in the context of global commitments towards universal healthcare policy, especially regarding LMICs. We offer an illustration of the political factors driving the financing of the Indian healthcare system.
