Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed major structural fissures in Asian economies. These include severe health vulnerabilities; continuing hunger and other deprivations; pervasive discrimination against groups outside of the mainstream; abysmal living conditions of cities; large masses of informal, daily wage employees, and wide inequalities. This chapter focuses on five major priorities: helping countries restore rapid but more participatory, inclusive, and broad-based growth; ensuring health for all and preventing future pandemics; ridding Asia of the scourge of hunger; providing social security to all citizens; and building liveable cities, especially for the poor. Although its resources are limited, the ADB can contribute in each area, provided it aligns its operational priorities to address these challenges.
