Abstract

This chapter discusses the ICT industry and digital economic transformations globally and in Asia. It summarizes salient trends and points to variations in the scale and scope of ICT development across countries. ADB’s Strategy 2030s points to the need to enhance the ADB’s role in innovation and technology development in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. While the importance of ICT is likely to rise in all sectors and countries, much of the focus of the ADB’s ICT work should be on areas in which the ADB already has substantive experience. They include infrastructure projects along with more recent priorities related to urban development, education, health care, social protection, the environment and climate change, private sector development, regional cooperation and integration.
