Abstract

In recent years, Swiss banks, similarly to most of the global financial industry, has been facing two, apparently conflicting, challenges. The first is to maintain cost-efficiency and profitability while simultaneously assuring the highest level of operational quality and client-proximity; the second relates to the integration of sustainability values into financial business processes. In this chapter we want to present how this is happening in Switzerland, discussing the roles of digitalization and ESG goals, and providing readers with a perspective on the policy agenda and the regulatory challenges, the banks' business strategies, and the external economic competition. The Swiss case will be discussed as an example from which some insights may be gained to address the future development of Emerging Markets Banking systems.
