Abstract

PhD internships can be an invaluable experience for a PhD researcher, providing them with new perspectives and additional experience to add to their CVs. They can also provide much needed insight for host organisations, on projects which require an intensive short intervention. This chapter discusses how PhD students can find, choose, apply for, and get the most out of PhD internships. It gives advice to those interested in PhD internships about aspects of managing the PhD intern project, and how to make sure that expectations are met. It provides an example of a PhD internship from the perspective of the PhD intern and from the host organisation. Throughout the chapter are top tips for those seeking to conduct a PhD internship.
