Abstract

This chapter investigates economic regionalism in Southeast Asia with a focus on the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), the regional economic integration project of ASEAN. The analysis traces economic regionalism in ASEAN from the pre-AEC period to the development of AEC. It also outlines AEC’s current structure and the dynamics among ASEAN’s economic cooperation initiatives and schemes pushed forward by non-ASEAN stakeholders. The concepts of open regionalism and ASEAN centrality underpinning ASEAN’s external economic relations are examined. The chapter concludes with discussions of the role of AEC in shaping regional economic integration and the future of AEC amidst major challenges, namely the US-China strategic competition and COVID-19 pandemic.
