The gender gap in information systems service organizations in Korea: a contextual hierarchy perspective

Abstract

Confucian ethics is still deeply rooted in modern Korea. From the contextual hierarchy perspective, the goal of this chapter is to investigate: (1) how the Information Systems service industry’s project-based work practice influences the work lives of female professionals in Korea and (2) how the nature of the IS service business influences the career development of female professionals. The research questions are explored using thematic analysis of female employees from big IS service firms representing the Korean information systems service industry. This chapter is built upon previous interviews conducted in 2010 by adding more interviews conducted in 2021. The analysis of 2021 interview results indicate some similarities with the interview results of 2010. Most of the masculine discourses found in the IS service industry in 2010 are continuously repeated and reproduced in 2021.
