The origins of School Strike 4 Climate NZ

Abstract

School Strike 4 Climate NZ, stemming from the global movement initiated by Greta Thunberg, brings together youth from all corners of Aotearoa New Zealand to put pressure on the Government to take immediate, transformative action on the climate crisis. The Aotearoa New Zealand branch of School Strike is only a year old, situated within a diverse and well-established wider climate movement. In this first year, the collective of young people, along with partner youth climate organisations, organised three major strikes with the largest one on September 27th mobilising 170,000 people nationwide, 3.5% of the country’s population. This paper reflects on the successes and learnings of this mobilisation, and the next steps required in the fight for climate justice.
