Academic values and meta-research

Abstract

Traditional academic values face new challenges today, both because of changing political winds and in light of post-COVID-19 societal realities. Academics may be forced to revalue norms (such as notions of self-governance, academic freedom, and the importance of peer review), disciplinary standards (of rigour and ‘what counts’ as excellent research and scholarship), and views on the relationships between research and teaching or between the university and society. This chapter explores traditional academic values in terms of meta-research, outlining and projecting some conflicts of values in light of our current and potential future political and societal situations. The overall question addressed is this: How far should academics go to defend their traditional values?
