The European transport infrastructure system

Abstract

This chapter highlights the diverse forms of transportation infrastructure across Europe. It notes that despite the process of European integration, cross border traffic remains very much a minority source of transport flows across the EU. The chapter identifies that inter-state transport infrastructure integration has been a long standing theme within Europe but that the launch of the TEN-T programme sought to formalise these informal processes of integration within a single programme. To date, TEN-T has been of limited success and has been downscaled as a strategic priority for the EU. However infrastructural integration based on inter-state co-operation remains an on-going theme especially within the context of China's Belt and Road Initiative.
