Abstract

In this chapter we provide a review of the recent economic literature on the impacts of organised crime on elections, and on public policies. Politicians represent a major target for criminal organisations as they are shaping political decisions and policy implementation. Two central challenges characterising this literature, namely the measurement of organised crime and its potential endogeneity, will feature prominently in this review. When discussing empirical studies, we will focus on the source of identification proposed to overcome the potential endogeneity, and the specific proxy adopted to measure the presence of organised crime.
