Engaging distance learners with no economic background in an online health economics course

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to use a case study to outline potential mechanisms for engaging distance learners with no economic background. Health Economics (HE) is becoming an important field for healthcare decision making. More health care professionals are deciding to undertake HE module as part of their continuing professional development programme. We outline some of the challenges of teaching this group. Next, we discuss some of the pedagogical theory which informed the development of a range of activities to foster engagement. We then present the case study of the online module for students in a Master of Science in Oncology and Palliative Care programme and provide examples of activities, including a Market Failure Exercise. We discuss how these activities were revised after reflecting on their design for fostering engagement and learning. We conclude by discussing how these exercises can be used in practice and some areas that should be considered by teachers wishing to implement these exercises.
