Volunteering within sport for development and peace (SDP) projects

Abstract

This chapter examines recent research on volunteerism within sport for development and peace (SDP) projects. It utilises personal narrative and relies on the author’s experiences as a volunteer and worker in SDP to highlight definitional challenges with volunteerism. The chapter also outlines key research gaps. It suggests that future research consider explorations of volunteerism through the lens of gender and the method of intersectionality. It argues for more scholarly attention to projects and individuals who receive or host volunteers. This will allow a greater understanding of how volunteerism operates within SDP projects and the field and how one might conceptualise the difference between local and transnational volunteers.
