Measuring the creative economy

Abstract

A lack of definitional consistency has led to differences in how creative industries are measured in different countries, precluding a global understanding of what by any measure is a global economic phenomenon. This chapter reviews the choices that analysts must make in measuring the creative industries through the example of the United Kingdom, where arguably there has been greatest effort in recent years to develop a standard. The chapter discusses what is the distinctive feature of the creative industries as an industrial sector – that they specialize in employing creative talent – and shows how this has been used to identify the creative industries, in the UK and, as an increasing number of international studies show, beyond. The chapter equips cultural economics teachers with a statistical exercise and reading suggestions to engage students with the issues.
