Describe el mundo de los marinos, la tecnología de navegación, la dimensión de la flota, los barcos que la conformaban, el número de hombres que viajaban, el armamento, las mercancías, las enfermedades de los navegantes, el peligro de los piratas, las rutas a España, los enfrentamientos con la naturaleza para salvar la vida y la ciudad de Cartagena como puerto en el siglo XVII.||*Este capítulo se encuentra incluido en la segunda parte del libro Cartagena de Indias en el siglo XVII, titulada "Economía y comercio"
