Abstract

En la academia latinoamericana pocos estudios exploran con rigor el tema del mercenarismo y la contratación de compañías militares y de seguridad privadas. Cuestiones como la definición de mercenario, los alcances del derecho internacional en el control de esta industria en crecimiento y las implicaciones de su contratación en países en desarrollo, merecen especial atención dese un abordaje transdiciplinar. En este contexto, el propósito de este libro es ofrecerle al lector una aproximación en América Latina. Para ello se discuten y exploran conceptos claves, y se caracterizan jurídica e históricamente el uso de los mercenarios y de las compañías privadas. Así se analizan tanto los problemas como los retos políticos y legales de su contratación.A lo largo de los cuatro capítulos que componen la publicación, se presentan los resultados de nueve investigaciones que procuran una mayor comprensión del fenómeno del mercenarismo y las compañías militares y de seguridad privadas. Con acierto, los interesados en el tema, e inclusive tomadores de decisiones, encontrarán en este estudio una herramienta analítica para entender por qué este tema ha cobrado una importancia significativa entre las múltiples disciplinas de las ciencias sociales.
