La pandemia por la COVID-19 podría incrementar el trabajo infantil en América Latina y el Caribe. Nota Técnica N° 1

Abstract

El mundo atraviesa una crisis sanitaria, social y económica sin precedentes debido a la pandemia causada por la enfermedad COVID-19. Si bien la frecuencia de la infección y la mortalidad en la población infantil son más bajos que en otros grupos de edad, los niños y las niñas están siendo afectados por los impactos socioeconómicos y, en algunos casos, por las medidas de mitigación que inadvertidamente pueden provocar más daño que beneficio. La pandemia exacerbará las vulnerabilidades ya existentes, incluyendo un mayor riesgo de matrimonio infantil, trabajo infantil y embarazo adolescente. Según estimaciones de la OIT (2017), el porcentaje de niños, niñas y adolescentes entre 5 y 17 años en situación de trabajo infantil en América Latina y el Caribe bajó de 10,8% en 2008 a 7,3% en 2016, lo que equivale a una disminución de 3,7 millones de personas en esa situación. A pesar de estas buenas noticias, todavía hay alrededor de 10,5 millones de niños, niñas y adolescentes en el trabajo infantil, siendo que la actual situación tiene el potencial de revertir esta tendencia positiva, lo que coloca a la región en riesgo de no poder alcanzar la meta 8.7 de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), en lo referido a “poner fin al trabajo infantil en todas sus formas de aquí a 2025”.
