Abstract

A América Latina e o Caribe é uma das regiões mais desiguais do mundo. Essa desigualdade não é apenas alta, mas até excessiva para o nível de desenvolvimento da região, sugerindo uma espécie de excepcionalidade latino-americana. Além disso, a desigualdade na região não é um fenômeno novo, mas suas origens remontam à época colonial. Apesar dos muitos avanços alcançados em diversos indicadores de desenvolvimento econômico e social nas últimas décadas, os níveis médios de desigualdade na região não mudaram de forma substancial ou sustentável e continuam sendo, além das nuances de cada país, uma característica das sociedades latino-americanas e caribenhas.
