Economía circular e innovación tecnológica en residuos sólidos: Oportunidades en América Latina

Abstract

El cambio climático es considerado como uno de los mayores desafíos globales del siglo XXI. Existe un consenso general entre la mayoría de expertos en clima: el calentamiento global es el resultado de las crecientes concentraciones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) en la atmósfera de la Tierra. Si se pusiera en marcha sistemas sustentables de gestión de residuos, los países en desarrollo y las economías emergentes no solo reducirían considerablemente sus emisiones de GEI a un costo relativamente bajo, sino que también contribuirían significativamente a mejorar las condiciones de salud pública y protección del medio ambiente. A partir de esta situación, CAF planteó la necesidad de realizar esta investigación que tiene como objetivo hacer una recopilación sobre la gestión de residuos sólidos y los avances tecnológicos utilizados en algunos países asiáticos y europeos con más desarrollo del tema, como son, Japón, Corea del Sur, Alemania, Noruega, España, Italia y Suiza. Estos avances tecnológicos se deben caracterizar por tener un potencial de replicación en la región de América Latina para su correcta implementación, con el fin de buscar medidas apropiadas de mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático, bajo el concepto de la economía circular.
