Abstract

Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) zählt zu den wichtigsten englischen Philosophen seiner Zeit. Vielen gilt er als Begründer der angelsächsischen Soziologie. Sein 16 Bände umspannendes System der synthetischen Philosophie und andere seiner Schriften wurden noch zu seinen Lebzeiten ins Deutsche übertragen. Spencer war weitgehend Autodidakt. Er setzte sich für das allgemeine Wahlrecht ein und schrieb u.a. für den Economist. Einer seiner wichtigsten Beiträge zur Geistesgeschichte liegt in der Entwicklung und Ausweitung seiner an Darwin orientierten Evolutionstheorie auf gesellschaftliche Prozesse.
