Die Babyboomer: auf dem Gipfel der demografischen Welle

Abstract

Der größte Babyboomer-Jahrgang 1964 wird im Jahr 2024 sechzig Jahre alt. Der Gipfel der sogenannten demografischen Welle erreicht somit Ende der 2020er-Jahre das Rentenalter. Wie kam es zu dem Phänomen der Babyboomer? Wer gehört eigentlich dazu? Der Beitrag liefert Antworten zu diesen Fragen mithilfe eines kurzen demografischen Porträts. Die Babyboomer sind in unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen im geteilten Deutschland aufgewachsen. Ihr Erwachsenenleben begann kurz vor der deutschen Vereinigung. Ihr generatives Verhalten in Ost und West ist ein wesentlicher Teil der gesellschaftlichen Transformation in der Nachwendezeit. Mit Blick auf die steigende Lebenserwartung und den künftigen Pflegebedarf wird deutlich, welche Herausforderungen die voranschreitende Alterung der Babyboom-Generation mit sich bringen wird.
