Frauenerwerbstätigkeit und Geburtenverhalten

Abstract

Der Zusammenhang zwischen der Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen und der Fertilität ist nicht geklärt. Gleichwohl wird die steigende Frauenerwerbstätigkeit häufig als Ursache für den Geburtenrückgang angeführt. Auf der Basis makroökonomischer Daten wird gezeigt, dass in Westdeutschland weiterhin ein negativer Einfluss von der Erwerbstätigkeit auf die Geburtenrate ausgeht, während der Einfluss der Kinderzahl auf die Arbeitsmarktbeteiligung der Frauen gesunken ist. Ein internationaler Vergleich zeigt, dass der Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Realisierung von hohen Geburtenraten und hoher Frauenerwerbstätigkeit zukommt. Westdeutschland befindet sich mit einer Erwerbstätigenquote der Frauen von 59 Prozent im Mittelfeld. Die niedrige Fertilität von 1,4 Kindern je Frau zeigt an, dass noch nicht alle Möglichkeiten ausgeschöpft sind, Kinder und Beruf zu vereinbaren.
